Two months ago "Ghana Water And Sewage" announced that the reservoir had dried up. In recent years the population in the Central Region using the water reservoir has increased. The system hasn't been able to cope and essential repairs and expansion of the reservoir hasn't been managed.
This, combined with the lack of rain in the region, means that the main water supply for the whole region has failed. Thousands of people who had become reliant on collecting clean supplies from the standpipe each day are now having to find other means.
The expected rainy season has been disappointing and there hasn't been enough rain to supply the rivers and boreholes. Boreholes have become salty. People have to fetch water from streams and gutters wherever available. Indeed a cholera outbreak has started in some areas.
The government has introduced some tanker deliveries to villages but it is not sufficient. Hospitals and schools have closed. Even the mental hospital has closed turning out long term patients without support into the community.
Children queue for hours at boreholes and tanker supplies to fetch a bucket full for the family. The shortage is having a serious impact on normal, everyday life and undoubtedly there will be loss of life. At the moment the rains have not been sufficient and the end of the rainy season is approaching. It does not seem at all clear how the problem can be resolved.
Please keep praying for more rain.
